‘Extremely upsetting’ students witnessed tasing of Johnny Mims, superintendent says

The superintendent of Jefferson County schools on Tuesday declined to “discuss specifics” about Birmingham police body cam footage of the arrest of Minor High School’s band director but said it was “extremely upsetting” students witnessed the event.

“I am not prepared to discuss specifics on the content of the video. Our district leadership is still reviewing and analyzing the video and related circumstances, and will reserve further comment pending completion of that review,” Dr. Walter Gonsoulin said. “I appreciate everyone’s patience.”

Gonsoulin thanked Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond for meeting with school officials Monday evening and allowing them to review the footage of the tasing of Johnny Mims after Thursday night’s football game at Jackson-Olin High School.

“My initial reaction is sadness,” Gonsoulin said.

“It’s extremely upsetting to me that our students, our children, had to witness that scene. Nothing is more important than their well-being. Counselors from our JEFCOED Cares team have been made available to those students who wish to talk about what they saw.”

Mims is charged is charged with disorderly conduct, harassment and resisting arrest. He is on administrative leave pending ongoing investigations.

Police contend Mims didn’t comply with their order for his band to stop playing so they could clear the stadium following the end of the Sept. 14 game.

His attorney, State Rep. Juandalynn Givan, said the video did not change her mind that her client was wronged by Birmingham police.

The Alabama Education Association and Givan will hold a joint press conference on Wednesday to further address the incident.
